ASSSSCAT & Million Dollar Strong
I was the guest monologist at the UCB Theater ASSSSCAT show Saturday night in LA and had an AMAZING time. I was nervous because you have to deliver monologues based on a one word suggestion from the audience, and I had never done anything like that before. I couldn't base it on my standup; it would have been too jokey and not give the improvisers anything to work with. Doing the show reminded me that in comedy when in doubt, be honest.
I was revealing aspects of my personality that I'm not proud of; my temper, my germophobia, my embarrassingly detailed knowledge of pro wrestling. I felt like that weeping wrestling fan. And to watch these brilliant improvisers perform my life in front of my eyes was surreal. It was like watching your life, but much funnier. At one point I was talking about how important it is to live your life in the moment and not dwell on the past or obsess about the future, and I received the most honest applause I've ever experienced in my life. It was like the best group therapy session ever. I highly recommend everyone go to an ASSSSCAT show at least once in their lives, they will be richer for the experience.
Oh, and FOD's own Owen Burke was one of the improvisers, and he did an impression of a retarded HMO doctor that was spot on, definitely a highlight of the show. Nailed it.
I am forever grateful to FOD for the love they gave to What's It Gonna Be. Mike O'Connell & I are still shocked that it got the exposure it did. It just illustrates how viral videos are an amazing showcase tool for the industry and can really further your career. I want to give a shout out to our friend Clay Allen for directing the video. Mike O is the musical genius, I'm the Asian hack in a silver suit, but it was Clay's idea to do the video in a single take. We did at least 15 takes, with Mike O getting progressively more drunk on his generic gin. He's so method. BTW, we're presently in the studio recording songs for the Million Dollar Strong album which if all goes well, will be the soundtrack to a film based on our characters. And if you enjoyed What's It Gonna be, then you'll love I'm Gonna Fuck That Perm Straight.
