Emmy Predictions from Someone Who Has Only Seen “Breaking Bad”

The 2014 Primetime Emmy Awards air tonight, celebrating the best of television entertainment. The only television show I have watched in the last several years is AMC’s “Breaking Bad.” Here are my predictions about who the big winners will be.
DRAMA SERIES
“Breaking Bad” (AMC)
“Downton Abbey” (PBS)
“Game of Thrones” (HBO)
“Mad Men” (AMC)
“True Detective” (HBO)
“House of Cards” (Netflix)
My pick to win: “Breaking Bad”
The only one of these shows that I have seen is Breaking Bad. I enjoyed that show. My guess for best drama is Breaking Bad.
LEAD ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Bryan Cranston, “Breaking Bad” (AMC)
Jeff Daniels, “The Newsroom” (HBO)
Kevin Spacey, “House of Cards” (Netflix)
Jon Hamm, “Mad Men” (AMC)
Matthew McConaughey, “True Detective” (HBO)
Woody Harrelson, “True Detective” (HBO)
My pick to win: Bryan Cranston in “Breaking Bad”
Again, Breaking Bad is the only one of these that I’ve seen. I thought it was really good. Other people who I heard talk about it also seemed to enjoy it.
LEAD ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Michelle Dockery, “Downton Abbey” (PBS)
Claire Danes, “Homeland” (Showtime)
Robin Wright, “House of Cards” (Netflix)
Kerry Washington, “Scandal” (ABC)
Julianna Margulies, “The Good Wife” (CBS)
Lizzy Caplan, “Masters of Sex” (Showtime)
My pick to win: Anna Gunn as Skyler White in “Breaking Bad”
Even though she wasn’t nominated, Breaking Bad is the only TV show I’ve seen so I am sticking to my Gunn here. I guess I am banking on that the presenter of this award will rip open the envelope, get a crazed look in their eyes, and then shout out, “I don’t care what the card says! The best actress is Anna Gunn!” That’s my prediction for this category.
SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A DRAMA
Jon Voight, “Ray Donovan” (Showtime)
Peter Dinklage, “Game of Thrones” (HBO)
Mandy Patinkin, “Homeland” (Showtime)
Josh Charles, “The Good Wife” (CBS)
Aaron Paul, “Breaking Bad” (AMC)
Jim Carter, “Downton Abbey” (PBS)
My pick to win: Aaron Paul, “Breaking Bad”
I thought it was very funny when the Aaron Paul character Jesse Pinkman would say, “Bitch!” throughout the show. I guess you could say this was sort of a catchphrase of his. It is possible that other shows had funny sidekicks saying “Bitch!” in a funny way, but I haven’t seen those shows so I really can’t say. I also liked it when his friends Badger and Skinny Pete would talk about drugs.
SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A DRAMA
Anna Gunn, “Breaking Bad” (AMC)
Maggie Smith, “Downton Abbey” (PBS)
Lena Headey, “Game of Thrones” (HBO)
Christine Baranski, “The Good Wife” (CBS)
Christina Hendricks, “Mad Men” (AMC)
Joanne Froggatt, “Downton Abbey” (PBS)
My pick to win: Anna Gunn in “Breaking Bad”
I already picked Anna Gunn to win in the Lead Actress category. So I guess I’ll just pick her to win for both “Lead” and “Supporting.” Just as long as Betsy Brandt doesn’t win for her portrayal of Marie Schrader. I found that character unlikeable, but not unlikeable in a fun way like Walter White.
COMEDY SERIES
“The Big Bang Theory” (CBS)
“Louie” (FX)
“Modern Family” (ABC)
“Veep” (HBO)
“Orange Is the New Black” (Netflix)
“Silicon Valley” (HBO)
My pick to win: “Orange Is the New Black” (Netflix)
I haven’t seen this show, but I did use Netflix to watch “Breaking Bad” so I guess I just want to send them some love.
VARIETY SERIES
“The Colbert Report” (Comedy Central)
“The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” (Comedy Central)
“Jimmy Kimmel Live” (ABC)
“The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (NBC)
“Real Time With Bill Maher” (HBO)
“Saturday Night Live” (NBC)
My pick to win: “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”
I saw when Bryan Cranston was on an episode of Fallon and I liked it. Unrelated, but remember the part in Breaking Bad when Hank figures out that Walter White and Walt Whitman are both WW? That gave me chills!
REALITY-COMPETITION PROGRAM
“The Amazing Race” (CBS)
“Dancing With the Stars” (ABC)
“Project Runway” (Lifetime)
“So You Think You Can Dance” (Fox)
“Top Chef” (Bravo)
“The Voice” (NBC)
My pick to win: “So You Think You Can Dance”
I forgot that I actually watched two shows this year: “Breaking Bad” and “So You Think You Can Dance.” Have you seen SYTYCD? It’s really good. The dancers all have heart and are really talented and it is just a really inspiring show and it doesn’t rely on celebs like Dancing With The Stars. It’s my second favorite show.
