TLC Launches Kickstarter For New Album And Before You Judge, Take A Gander At These Rewards!

It ‘s a tough sell to get the general public to fund a big star ‘s creative endeavor. I mean, people will do it, Zach Braff proved that, but it ‘s tough to justify asking hard working Americans to give you money if you ‘re basically known for being a multi millionaire star. R&B group TLC is doing just that today as they launch a Kickstarter campaign to fund a new/final album.

TLC is best known, of course, for Waterfalls and No Scrubs, two iconic pop songs that still get brought up today if you are walking by a waterfall or if, for whatever reason, you get sick of scrubs. Also TLC tragically lost one of its three members, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, back in 2002. The remaining members, T-Boz and Chilli, are gearing up to make one final album, but they need the public ‘s help to the tune of $150,000.

The Kickstarter is pretty straightforward. The two singers say they are looking to make the album this way so that they can have full creative control, which makes some sense. But of course they try to spin that as an “exciting opportunity” for the fans, which, ok, no one ‘s excited to give TLC money to fund something that should be funded by a record company or some of the millions and millions of dollars they made making 2 multiplatinum records that the fans gave them money for. But whatever, I understand why they had to make that the thrust of the sell and, hey, TLC is cool so I ‘m on board.

As with all Kickstarter campaigns, the real interesting stuff comes in the list of rewards that donors get for varying levels of $$$$ pledged. Listed on the Kickstarter page, TLC is offering some pretty creative rewards, ranging from pretty cool to kind of baffling. The rewards include a Chilli-led fitness class (pretty cool), a pdf document of a list of Chilli and T-Boz ‘s favorite songs (???), personalized TLC voicemail greetings (pretty cool if you have people other than your mom that still leave voicemails), and the outfits worn in their music videos (which the winner of would hang up on their wall? put in their drawer? wear themselves? I ‘m interested in finding out if you have answers).

But what ‘s not listed on the page are the secret rewards that they ‘re not promoting and only I know about. Here ‘s that list:

Pledge $1 or more
Receive a pdf of step by step directions for how to download TLC ‘s discography on iTunes for full price.

Pledge $7 or more
Receive the $5 reward and $2 back. And all the above rewards.

Pledge $32 or more

Pledge $42 or more
Receive a sock that T-Boz wore while cleaning up a spilled plate of spaghetti in her kitchen (she mopped up the spaghetti with the sock!). And all the above rewards.

Pledge $133 or more
Receive a shirt that has the words “Chasing Waterfalls” on it with a line through the words indicating that you won ‘t go chasing waterfalls, just like it says in our popular song. And all above rewards.
