‘Scienceology’ Episode #8: An Endless Duck Vagina?

As we all know from the endless articles and extensive television programming dedicated to the topic, female ducks have very complex vaginas; this ingenious evolutionary adaptation of false pathways is to prevent less desirable males from fertilizing the female ‘s eggs.

But until recently, scientists had no idea just how complicated a duck ‘s vagina could be. Enter Lupita, a duck with sex organs so labyrinthine, scientists at Columbia University are still trying to create a comprehensive 3D model of her reproductive system. Following some recent setbacks, researchers are increasingly pessimistic they will be able to fully explore Lupita ‘s vagina within the relatively limited 20-year lifespan of a duck.
