Payless Scams the Rich, Teaches Us the True Meaning of Christmas

I love a good deal. I don ‘t really dig shopping as an activity, but spending less money on stuff is always awesome. You know what I love even more than scoring a good deal, though?

Watching super rich people get punk ‘d

And it doesn ‘t happen often. Things like the catastrophic failure that was Fyre Fest are rare and fleeting, like Haley ‘s Comet, so we have to take time to really appreciate them when they happen.

Here ‘s what went down.

Payless ShoeSource, the retail company known for exactly what its name suggests – being the Source for Shoes that you Pay Less for, opened up a fake pop-up store in Santa Monica, CA, called “Palessi ‘ (subtle), and DECKED. IT. OUT.

Personally I think Grecian statues should be inside every Payless

So after creating this insanely nice (and convincing) pop-up, they filled it with Payless shoes and sold them to all the wealthy influencers who flocked to it, at – get this –

LUXURY PRICES AS HIGH AS AN 1,800 PERCENT MARKUP

I ‘m going to say that again in case you didn ‘t fully absorb it.

PAYLESS.
SOLD THEIR $20 SHOES.
FOR ANYWHERE BETWEEN $200 AND $600.
AND PEOPLE BOUGHT THEM.

Only $400?? WHAT A STEAL

Of course, though, as so many things are, this was kind of too good to be true. This entire ruse was a marketing campaign by Payless to show everyone that just because their shoes don ‘t come with a massive price tag doesn ‘t mean they aren ‘t still some decent shoes.

Fair play, Payless. Point well made.

At the end of the “experiment ‘, the influencers were told the truth. They were actually in a Pretty Woman ‘d budget shoe store this whole time, nothing is real, everything is a lie. And, yes, they were given their hundreds and hundreds of dollars back.

So, okay, it ‘s not exactly a Fyre Fest-esque scam.

But the important thing is thanks to Payless we all got to watch a bunch of vapid mega-wealthy influencers make asses out of themselves for the sake of holiday marketing. Which was kind of an early Christmas gift in itself.

Remember, the holidays aren ‘t about presents. The true spirit of the holiday season should be about knocking materialistic bourgeoisie elitists down a peg.
