In 2017 the internet was captivated by Kimiko Nishimoto, a 90-year-old woman from Japan who took the most wonderfully wholesome and hilarious self portraits imaginable. After attending a beginner ‘s photography class taught by her grandson, Nishimoto began snapping and editing her own photos at age 72, and hasn ‘t stopped since.
And thank fuck for that, because they ‘re a goddamn treasure.
If this is your first time hearing about her, here are a few of the original photos that the internet fell in love with. If you ‘ve seen them before and you ‘re reading this going “ugh I already saw this last year this is so old, ‘ shut up.
Now, look. I know that art is subjective and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. That ‘s fair. I get it.
But also, fuck that.
This woman is the greatest photographer ever, her self portraits belong in the Louvre, and I will fight anyone who tries to convince me otherwise.
Last January, Nishimoto ‘s work was featured at Tokyo ‘s Epson Imaging Gallery, in an exhibit titled “Asobokane ‘, which translates to “let ‘s play ‘
IS THAT NOT JUST THE MOST HEARTWARMING THING YOU ‘VE EVER HEARD? JESUS CHRIST
Unfortunately for those not within commuting distance, the exhibit didn ‘t travel beyond Japan. HOWEVER, we can all commemorate the anniversary of her exhibit thanks to the miracle of modern technology. Nishimoto has an instagram account where she posts her photographs – so all of her incredible quirky self portraits are right at your fingertips.
You ‘re gonna want to bookmark it.
You ‘re welcome.
