There are so many parody music videos out there on the Internet, but there aren ‘t enough that come from women celebrating or making fun of (and thus demystifying) biological aspects of their lives that ‘ ‘shockingly ‘ ‘ some humans on the planet cannot wrap their heads around. Sadly, misinformation and fear around menstruation isn ‘t just the kind of thing dumb dudes make dumb comments on: period shaming can be a symptom of extremely serious abuse and human rights concerns.
That ‘s just one reason why we appreciate this song from Kami Dimitrova & Angela Palladino, a pair of talented NYC comedians who have channeled 90s hip hop, Rachel Bloom, and Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell (who were in turn channeling Beastie Boys but we need to continue with the article ffs) to make light of Aunt Flo, all her insane demands, and the fact that women lead busy lives and don ‘t always remember when it ‘s their period. Shot with a combination of in-studio, high-speed, slo-mo awesomeness and real-world locations around NYC, “Surprise! It ‘s Your Period ‘ has lots of catchy breakdowns, handclaps, and plenty of style.
